About Etudes

Etudes is, as the masthead tells you, an online theatre and performance studies journal for emerging scholars.

What does that mean, "emerging scholars?"  From what are we emerging?  Into what?  What exactly defines one as having emerged?

What a journal for emerging scholars means for us is that it is a place to try things, to study, to dangle toes in the shallows or cannonball into the deep end.  But mostly, it's a place that celebrates those voices that haven't yet received their desired level of amplification.

Before we mix our metaphors any further, here's the deal.  We believe:
  • Success builds on success
  • Success builds on community
  • Each scholar has her/his own performative, unique voice
  • That voice should be heard, not drowned out by traditions and shoulds
  • Scholarship need not be dry to be rigorous
Etudes aims to publish one peer-reviewed edition annually, but is also interested in providing an ongoing forum for works in progress, non-traditional research, networking, advising, and general positivity that can be the key to sanity in the early years of our careers in academia.
