Meet the Peer Reviewers - Jerrold Scott
Name
Jerrold Scott
Position
Katharine Bakeless Nason Professor of Theater and Drama, and Chair, Department of Theater
Organization
Case Western Reserve University
Where did you go do school?
University of Pittsburgh (undergraduate)
University of South Carolina/The Shakespeare Theatre Company (graduate)
What are your areas of research/interest?
Classical performance techniques (Shakespeare & Victorians); directing pedagogy; dialects and phonetics
What got you started in theatre?
Originally? My friends were in the high school play and one of the cast members in the spring musical was suspended: I was asked to take his part as the train conductor in Bye Bye, Birdie. The next year I auditioned and was cast as Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun... I was bitten after that.
What is your favorite performance you've ever seen or been a part of? Why?
Hard to say, as I've enjoyed many, but probably playing Lord Goring in An Ideal Husband. I've never felt so "at home" in a character or show... the combination of wit and substance. I could've run that show for years.
What piece of advice would you give to emerging scholars?
Find your own voice. Everyone will have an opinion; take the good advice and let go that which doesn't speak to you (but make sure you give it an objective and strong consideration before you dismiss it). And write...as much as you can.
If someone were to write a play about your life, what would the title be?
Lord, not sure! The Professional Dilettante? :)
What is a fun fact that we should know about you?
I worked as a research assistant to an MP in the British House of Commons and met Margaret Thatcher.
